New Firmware Update for the Sony FS100
by Corey Steib on May 3rd, 2012

Hi to all filmmakers around the world, I hope that you all are having a great day and or night when you are reading this blog. So I bought my FS100 back almost 2 months ago now but I knew about the camera when it first came out and like everyone else I wanted more features. Now as of April 19, 2012 we have a new upgrade to it with loads of goodies. Here is the break down on what all Sony came out with on the 2.0 upgrade.
The much-anticipated update includes the ability to switch between NTSC and PAL recording, saving and loading Picture Profiles, and full support for the Sony LA-EA2 E-mount to Alpha mount adapter.

Although you cannot save or load individual Picture Profiles from the FS100, you can now save all of your profiles to an SDHC card or Memory Stick via the Camera Profile option in the Others menu. This will also allow you to save or load other camera settings, including all menu settings and assignable button options. This is especially useful in a multicamera environment, as you can quickly ensure each camera is configured identically with one menu setting.

Other updates include:

Additional 4x and 8x Expanded Focus magnification: (with user selectable focus area)
Selectable ISO or GAIN sensitivity display
Selectable Focus indication in FEET or METERS (E-mount lens only)
Selectable Shutter indication as EXPOSURE TIME or SHUTTER ANGLE
Adds the following Aspect-Ratio markers: 2.35:1, 1.85:1 and 1.66:1
Display ON/OFF button enables Zebra and/or Histogram overlay onto video output
Now I have had a chance to shoot with the camera after the 2.0 install but I have not had a chance to fully see what all the new features really did to the camera but I have heard that the dynamic range is much better and Abel Cine will be coming out with some picture profile updates for the camera later this week but for now you can see below the video I did this past weekend.
Camera Settings:
Nikon 28mm PL Lens,1080/24p at 1FPS with Shutter at 8 and ISO 500.

Now to note that this video was not color corrected. Everything was done in camera.
I will be doing more test with it tomorrow and I will post it up on my Twitter and Facebook page.
But I must give big kudos to Sony for creating a very awesome camera at a great price point and I am just shocked every time I take this camera out on a shoot what kind of images I can get out of it is just WOW :).
